Doors Open Day 2019

Part of the Scottish Civic Trust national campaign

Built in 1907, by William Daniel McLennan, St Matthew's is described as the most significant Art Nouveau church design in Europe which even ‘out-Mackintoshes’ Mackintosh. It features a War Memorial of stained glass by artist Robert Anning Bell, as well as an original condition organ built by Norman and Beard.

St Matthew’s was originally designed with a belfry, but unfortunately it was never completed due to cost. However, as a special marker we have a doorway that hides a staircase which would have led to the steeple. Think you’re clever enough to discover our secret stairway that leads to nowhere?

Come along and enjoy the building for yourself this year again! We will be open all weekend with a variety of activities for all ages.
